What Video and Audio Formats Does iTunes Support?

1. iTunes Supported Video Formats

In its Support center, Apple states that iTunes can play any videos compatible with QuickTime and files purchased or downloaded from iTunes Store. All files ending in .mov, m4v, .mp4 playable in QuickTime player are supported by iTunes. And MOV/MP4/M4V are said to be the best video format for iTunes.

MOV: A common multimedia format used for saving movies and other video files. It uses a proprietary compression algorithm developed by Apple Computer and is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows platforms. It contains one or more tracks, each of which stores a particular type of data: audio, video, effects, or text.

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14): It is a digital multimedia format most commonly used to store video and audio, as well as subtitles and images. It allows streaming over the Internet.

M4V: The M4V file format is a video container format developed by Apple and is very similar to the MP4 format. But it may optionally be protected by Apple's FairPlay DRM copy protection. iTunes M4V movies, TV episodes, music videos are usually protected by DRM.

2. iTunes Supported Audio Formats

iTunes supports to play audios like MP3, AAC, AIFF, WAV, Audible .aa/.aax files, M4B, M4A and M4P music files.

3. Tips on How to Play Videos in iTunes

Tip 1. Play Common Video/Auido Files in iTunes

For videos and audio files that are compatible with iTunes formats and without DRM protection, you can play them by clicking it in the normal way. However, for videos incompatible with iTunes like AVI, VOB, WMV, etc., you can use Video Converter Genius to convert them to the right file format.

Tip 2. Plat DRM-protected iTunes Purchased/Rental Movies

Movies, TV episodes and music videos purchased from iTunes are different the common ones. To play them ,you have to remove iTunes DRM and unprotect M4V with DRM removal software.
